New Delhi: India suffered their first defeat of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup, losing 2-0 to defending champions and Paris Olympics gold medallists Netherlands in their opening match of the second round on Friday.
The Indian defence once again produced a determined performance, with goalkeeper Savita and her teammates keeping the world No. 1 side under pressure for long periods. The Netherlands, who had scored 15 goals in three matches during the opening round, were unable to score a single field goal against India.
However, two successful penalty corners proved decisive.
The Netherlands made an explosive start and earned a penalty corner in the second minute. Yibbi Jansen, one of the tournament’s leading scorers, converted with a powerful drag flick to give the Dutch an early advantage.
India responded with disciplined defending. Bichoo made an important block to deny another Jansen effort before producing another excellent save moments later. Savita then took charge as the Netherlands continued to create opportunities without finding a second goal.
India also created openings. Lalremsiami helped win a penalty corner in the second quarter, but Deepika’s attempt was stopped by the first rusher. Salima Tete and Navneet also threatened the Dutch defence, although neither could find the target.
The Netherlands eventually doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Frederique Malta converted another penalty corner. India continued to battle until the final whistle, but repeated attacks in the closing stages failed to produce a goal.
Savita made crucial saves late in the contest to prevent the margin from increasing, including stopping an initial effort and rebound during a sustained Dutch attack.
India had entered the second round unbeaten after drawing against China and England and defeating South Africa 6-1 in the opening stage.
The loss now leaves India needing a strong response against Australia on Sunday. A victory will be crucial if the team is to keep its hopes of reaching the World Cup semi finals alive.
