New Delhi: Former Indian Air Force Vice Chief Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor has delivered one of the strongest public critiques of India’s indigenous Tejas Mk 2 fighter programme, warning that the aircraft may no longer be operationally relevant as a frontline combat platform by the time it enters service in significant numbers.
Speaking just weeks after retiring from the IAF, Kapoor said a fourth generation fighter inducted in the mid 2030s would struggle to match the evolving regional threat environment, particularly as China accelerates the deployment of fifth generation aircraft and develops sixth generation platforms.
“Operationally, definitely no,” Kapoor said when asked whether a fourth generation fighter would remain suitable in 2035. However, he clarified that aircraft such as the Tejas Mk 2 would still have value in filling capability gaps across India’s vast geographical expanse, even if they are not the cutting edge of the fleet.
Kapoor also criticised Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for repeated delays in delivering the Tejas Mk 1A, describing the lack of aircraft availability as a major concern for the Air Force. He questioned why promised capabilities had continued to be postponed and said HAL’s sense of urgency was not aligned with the operational needs of the IAF.
The Tejas programme has faced years of delays despite substantial investment. While the Air Force has ordered 180 Tejas Mk 1A fighters across two contracts, deliveries have yet to begin due to engine supply constraints and ongoing integration of radar, avionics and weapon systems.
Looking ahead, Kapoor argued that India should continue pursuing indigenous aircraft while simultaneously exploring partnerships with global sixth generation fighter programmes such as FCAS and GCAP. He said collaborating with established international consortia could help India access advanced technologies more quickly rather than relying solely on prolonged incremental development.
