Sydney:
In a thrilling display of cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), India has managed to take a significant 145-run lead over Australia at the end of the second day of the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This pivotal match saw India’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, dismantle the Australian batting lineup, while debutant Beau Webster’s half-century was not enough to stabilize the Australian innings.

India’s dominance began early on the second day as they dismissed Australia for 181 runs, securing a slender four-run first innings lead. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for just 2 runs in his second over of the day. This was followed by a blistering spell from Mohammed Siraj, who removed Sam Konstas and Travis Head in the same over, leaving Australia reeling at 4/39.
Despite the early setbacks, Steve Smith and debutant Beau Webster attempted to steady the ship with a 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket. However, Prasidh Krishna’s timely intervention saw Smith dismissed just before lunch, further weakening Australia’s position. Webster, who scored a commendable 57 runs on his debut, was eventually dismissed as India’s bowlers continued to press their advantage.
The post-lunch session saw India’s bowlers take control, with Siraj, Krishna, and Nitish Reddy combining to take the remaining Australian wickets. Siraj finished with 3/51, Krishna with 4/42, and Reddy with 2/32, highlighting the depth and strength of India’s bowling unit. This impressive performance was achieved despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who left the field for precautionary scans after feeling discomfort while bowling in the post-lunch session.
On the batting front, Rishabh Pant delivered a magical knock that has significantly boosted India’s chances of levelling the series. Coming in at a critical juncture with India at 59/3, Pant smashed a fifty in just 29 deliveries, breaking several records in the process. His aggressive innings, which included six fours and four sixes, not only gave India a substantial lead but also broke the record for the fastest Test fifty by a visiting batter in Australia, surpassing a 50-year-old record held by Roy Fredericks.
Pant’s innings was a testament to his free-flowing style, which has made him a fan favorite and a crucial component of India’s batting lineup. Despite his eventual dismissal for 61 runs, Pant’s contribution has given India a strong platform to push for a win and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
As the series hangs in the balance, India’s performance on the second day has set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the fifth Test, with the visitors aiming to level the series and keep their World Test Championship final qualification hopes alive.
