PANAJI: The Congress and the Goa Forward Party (GFP) have taken the first formal step towards forging a united opposition front in Goa, with senior leaders from both parties initiating discussions aimed at building a common political platform against the BJP government.
Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai on Saturday said he had initiated talks with Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar, honouring a commitment made during the party’s Canacona convention to work towards a united people’s alternative to the BJP.
Describing the meeting as cordial and constructive, Sardesai said the discussions were centred on the road ahead and placing Goa’s interests above political considerations. He termed the meeting the first step towards opposition unity and said the proposed roadmap would be shared transparently with the people.
Chodankar, who also described the meeting as cordial and fruitful, said both leaders held detailed discussions on what he termed the key challenges facing Goa under the BJP government led by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant.
The Congress leader said both parties also discussed strengthening their alliance in the larger interest of Goa and indicated that formal negotiations would soon be held to build wider consensus.
Emphasising the principles behind any future alliance, Chodankar said a successful coalition must be guided by discipline, mutual respect, alliance dharma and the willingness of partners to make sacrifices for a common objective.
He said the shared goal was to unite opposition forces and present Goa with what he described as a transparent, accountable and people-centric alternative to the BJP government.
