New Delhi: India’s long delayed cricket tour of Bangladesh could finally take place later this year, with reports suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are working on finalising a schedule. If the tour is confirmed, it is expected to be held in September and could result in India’s proposed T20I series against Afghanistan being postponed.
The bilateral series was originally scheduled for last year but was deferred amid diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Cricketing relations also came under strain after Kolkata Knight Riders released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season.
The situation escalated when the Bangladesh Cricket Board urged the International Cricket Council to shift its T20 World Cup matches out of India, citing security concerns. The request was not accepted, and Bangladesh was subsequently replaced by Scotland in the tournament after the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
Recent developments, however, indicate that relations between the BCCI and the BCB have improved. Officials from both cricket boards reportedly held discussions during the recent ICC meeting in London regarding the possibility of reviving the tour.
According to reports, Bangladesh is open to hosting all six matches across just two venues, with Dhaka and Chattogram emerging as the preferred locations. The proposed itinerary is expected to include three One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals, although holding only one format was also discussed during the talks.
One major challenge remains India’s previously scheduled T20I series against Afghanistan, which is set to be hosted in New Delhi during the same period. If the Bangladesh tour goes ahead in September, the Afghanistan series is likely to be rescheduled to avoid a scheduling clash.
The report also states that any final decision on the Bangladesh tour will depend on approval from the Government of India.
Before any Bangladesh assignment, India are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a two match Test series beginning on August 15. A separate T20I squad led by Shreyas Iyer will then compete at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan from September 17 to October 3, leaving a window in early September that could accommodate the Bangladesh tour if all approvals are secured.
