New Delhi: The Centre has clarified its position on India’s participation in the 2027 South Asian Federation Games in Pakistan, saying any decision will be guided by the country’s sports policy, international sporting regulations and the interests of Indian athletes.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India’s participation in international government or multilateral sporting championships is governed by the latest framework issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He added that the government will also consider directions issued by relevant international sports organisations.
The clarification comes amid continuing sensitivities surrounding sporting ties between India and Pakistan. Under the sports policy announced in May 2026, India ruled out resuming bilateral sporting engagements with Pakistan while allowing athletes from both countries to compete in multilateral international competitions.
The policy means Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral series, while Pakistani teams will not participate in bilateral competitions in India. However, athletes from both countries can compete against each other at international and regional multilateral events, including competitions hosted by India.
The government has also sought to make India a more attractive destination for major international sporting events by streamlining visa procedures for foreign athletes, officials and technical personnel. Officials of international sports governing bodies can receive priority multiple entry visas valid for up to five years.
Pakistan is scheduled to host the 2027 South Asian Games from April 3 to 11, with Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar selected as the host cities. The regional multi sport event has faced several postponements since it was originally scheduled for 2021.
The latest schedule was approved by the South Asia Olympic Council during a meeting in Islamabad, attended by representatives from several participating countries.
India remains the most successful country in South Asian Games history, with 2,378 medals, including 1,263 gold, 736 silver and 379 bronze medals. The Centre’s latest clarification leaves India’s participation in the Pakistan hosted edition subject to the applicable policy and international sporting framework.
