PANAJI: Amidst the ravaging COVID19 pandemic and shortage of medical necessities like Oxygen, Remdesivir, beds etc, Goa government seems to be grappling with another huge problem – Manpower crisis.
It is an open secret that while the bed capacity is being increased by the government, there is acute shortage of staff. Despite this there is huge demand from the VIPs for health workers.
Sources, speaking to Goemakrponn said that there is just one doctor, two nurses and one helper for 40 patients.
“The doctors, nurses are overworked. They are increasing the beds but where is the staff. The existing staff is working non-stop. As a result many of the health workers themselves have started testing positive,” the doctors revealed.
The doctor says, “we are not saying we do not want to work. But we are also human beings. Many of us have not seen families for so long”.
The doctors say that the new Super-Speciality Block with 150 beds, Examination hall with 150 beds is started but where is the staff.
“How much will you overload the existing staff?” they asked.
The Goa Association of Residence Doctors has exposed the government completely on the issue of VIP treatment and also shortage of medical facilities.
On Sunday, the GARD has exposed the VIP culture in the Goa Medical College and Hospital, where the common man suffer for Covid medical aid including beds, whereas VIP treatment is given to preferential people.
“Even in these times of pandemic, VIP culture is still very much prevalent. Residents in covid casualty who are managing more than 30 new patients at a time are told to see these “VIP” patients on a preferential basis and get them admitted fast, even if many times, they don’t require admission,” said GARD.
GARD has also claimed that other critical patients who have been waiting for 2-3 hours to be seen then fights with us.
Claiming that the oxygen supply in various covid wards is not even close to sufficient, GARD has said that central oxygen flow delivers very low flow oxygen at times and is inadequate to keep NIVS and ventilators working effectively.
“The oxygen cylinders being used for patients get over in the middle of the night and it takes at least 2-3 hours for replacement cylinders to come and sometimes more than that and for this time period, the patients are kept without oxygen with saturation’s dropping to less than 60%,” said GARD.
The doctors under GARD said that the same situation is also faced in SGDH. The bed situation is even worse. There are critical patients who have to be managed on trolleys and floors and kept on ventilators in the critical covid wards. Wards with capacity of 30 beds have more than 50 patients on average.
GARD added, “On a daily basis, we read in the news all the higher authorities giving statements that there is no issue of oxygen and beds. The patients then ask the resident doctors on duty in casualty and in wards that if there is no lack of beds, why our patient is kept on trolleys/wheelchairs/floor and why is our patient not getting oxygen. In the middle of the night when oxygen gets over, and patients worsen and sometimes die, it’s the junior doctor on duty who has to face angry relatives. And their anger about lack of facilities gets taken out on the duty residents,”
GARD also claimed that their demand for enhanced security by GARD hasn’t been adequately met by the authorities.
“We needs CCTV cameras inside all Covid wards and make sure that the ones already installed are working. We need posters and signs to be put all over the hospitals emphasizing that violence against HCWs will be dealt with firmly by the law. There is need of placing armed guards/police perso outside covid wards and casualty,” they said
