PANAJI: Amidst the high-voltage political drama in the State, the former Zilla Parishad member from the Porvorim Assembly constituency resigned from the Congress party, barely a month after joining.
This development has fuelled the speculation of Porvorim’s independent MLA Rohan Khaunte joining the BJP.
Gupesh, along with the supporters, submitted the resignation to the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar.
“We, the undersigned, who had joined the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee on 9/11/2021, would like to submit our resignation from the primary and active membership of Goa, Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect,” the letter of resignation said.
Sources said that Gupesh, a close confidante of Rohan Khaunte, resigned as he felt Congress was not serious about winning elections.
Ever since the development this morning, rumour mills seem to be working overtime to suggest the Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte is set to join the BJP.
However, the paper cannot independently say whether Khuante will join BJP or the party will help him fight the elections independently.
When contacted, Khaunte outrightly rejected any such moves.
“I have been getting calls and messages since morning. There is no such move. I will address a press conference soon and reveal everything,” he told this paper.
Media reports suggested that Khaunte had met the BJP campaign in charge of Devendra Fadnavis and CT Ravi last week.
However, Khaunte has denied meeting any BJP official to date.
However, sources in the BJP confirmed that Khaunte is joining the party.
“Yes, Khaunte is joining the party when I cannot tell you. But that is a certainty. Khaunte will be on stage when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the crowd on December 19,” the source said.
Khaunte’s supporters had joined Congress last month and the MLA too had said that he would be joining the party at the end of his term in January.
However, with the current development, though there is no clarity of Khaunte joining BJP, it is absolutely clear that he is at least not joining the Congress as speculated earlier.
Meanwhile, another strong Congress leader from Curtorim Moreno Rebello resigned from the party.
Rebelo is expected to join BJP soon.
In his resignation, Rebelo has said, “Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco who has never participated in any party activity for last four and half years and on the contrary, only abused party leaders and yourself, worked against the official party candidate of Curtorim and Raia in the recently held Zilla Panchayat election is promoted as working president of the party and is declared as a party candidate by senior leaders during the recently held convention.
