New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday and highlighted the significant expansion of India-Russia economic cooperation across several key sectors.
Jaishankar, who arrived in Russia for a two day visit, conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Putin and delivered a personal message from the Indian leader. The meeting covered bilateral relations as well as major global developments.
During the discussion, Jaishankar pointed to the progress made in trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation. He said the two countries had a strong record of cooperation to present and expressed confidence in further strengthening economic ties.
The visit comes ahead of Putin’s expected trip to New Delhi for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12 and 13. Jaishankar also indicated that Modi is expected to meet Putin during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, followed by the BRICS gathering in India.
Putin said trade between Russia and India had increased during the year and highlighted Moscow’s growing supply of fertilisers to the Indian market. He indicated that Russia was prepared to continue supporting India’s fertiliser requirements in the future.
The Russian president also asked Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to Prime Minister Modi and expressed hope of meeting him soon on the sidelines of the SCO summit.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar held discussions with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, focusing on measures to expand bilateral trade and deepen economic cooperation.
The latest diplomatic engagement comes as India and Russia seek to broaden their long standing partnership beyond traditional defence cooperation, with greater emphasis on trade, energy, fertilisers, nuclear power and other economic sectors.
