CANACONA: Metres away from the Goa border Polem checkpost, Karnataka Excise officials at Majali Checkpost confiscated Spirit worth 90300/- besides 8 lakhs owrth Harpic Products and 3 lakhs worth liquor bottles, while Goa Excise officials search of an suspected Canter Pick-up did not yeild any illegal consignment.
According to sources at Majali Checkpost, Karnataka Excise officials intercepted a Swift Car which just crossed Polem checkpost, and on search found 33.40 litres of liquor bottles worth RS.3.12 lakhs.
The Karnataka excise Sleuths later intercepted a Tamil Nadu registration TN -29 BZ 2794 following a tip-off, found ‘Spirit’ Cans hidden behind the empty boxes of Harpic Products in the container were detected from a truck which had just crossed Goa Checkpost. Karnataka officials put the figures of Rs.8 lakhs as the cost of Harpic Products, and the value of Truck at Rs 12 Lakhs.
Interestingly, after Goa Excise acting onca similar tip-off, where surprise to find nothing incriminating in the Canter Pick-up, excise Sleuths had intercepted and searched at Polem Checkpost.
Goa Excise Inspector Ankush Kankonkar who alongwith his senior Supdt of Excise Chandranath Dessai, who were physically present at the Polem checkpost alongwith other officials searched in vain, a Canter Pick-up bearing registration no. KL-41 S-8182, but found only some printed Liquor lables.
Kankonkar further informed there was nothing incriminating found in the Canter, except for Printed Liquor Labels.
Sources at Canacona Excise However informed that though Goa Excise officials are strictly enforcing checking of any pilferage of Goas revenue, had to sometimes take calculated stand to do combing Operations especially on loaded vehicles.
We are certainly acting and do not leave anything to chances if there is any tipoff, but if we continue to search each and every vehicles passing through the gate it also amounts to harrassment to the concerned and also, it become tedious and worrisome to reload and repack the opened containers, etc.-
