New Delhi:
In a thrilling encounter at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, India succumbed to a 26-run defeat against England in the third T20I of the five-match series. Despite the loss, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav highlighted the importance of learning from the experience, as England reduced India’s lead to 2-1 in the series.
Ben Duckett’s impressive 51 runs was the cornerstone of England’s batting performance, helping them post a total of 171 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. However, India’s inability to chase down this target, managing only 145/9 in 20 overs, was a stark reminder of the areas that need improvement.
India’s struggle to form meaningful partnerships was a significant factor in their defeat. The team lost wickets at regular intervals, which hindered their ability to build a solid foundation. Suryakumar Yadav noted that the absence of expected dew during the evening also played a role in the game’s dynamics.
When Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel were at the crease, with India needing 55 runs from 24 balls, the game seemed within reach. However, England’s Adil Rashid proved to be the game-changer. His economical and precise bowling, yielding just 15 runs in four overs, prevented India from rotating the strike effectively. “Credit goes to Adil Rashid; he bowled really well. That’s why he is a world-class bowler,” Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged.
Varun Chakravarthy was the shining star for India, taking a five-wicket haul that included the crucial wicket of England’s captain, Jos Buttler. Despite this impressive performance, it was not enough to secure a win for India. Chakravarthy’s disciplined approach and hard work were praised by Suryakumar Yadav, who emphasized that such dedication is key to achieving results in the shortest format of the game.
Return of Mohammed Shami
The match also marked the return of Mohammed Shami to international cricket after his last appearance in the 2023 World Cup final. Although he went wicketless, Shami showed promising signs of regaining his form, consistently bowling around 135 kph and maintaining a flawless seam position.
Learning from Mistakes
Suryakumar Yadav underscored the importance of learning from T20 games, particularly from the mistakes made during this match. “We always learn from a T20 game. Conceding 170 from 127 for 8 was too much. In batting also, we have a few things to learn,” he said. This defeat serves as a valuable lesson for the Indian team, highlighting the need to improve both their bowling and batting strategies.
As the series moves forward, India will look to rectify these issues and come back stronger in the upcoming matches.
