VASCO: A very large 25cm × 15cm × 10cm mass/tumor involving the whole of right kidney was successfully and completely removed in a 74 year old male patient with a previous history of heart disease/stroke, high blood sugar and BP.
After full investigations (Triple phase CT, CT Chest, Cardiac Function Tests, Lung Function Tests etc) the
patient underwent Right Radical Nephrectomy (complete removal of tumour along with surrounding fat, lymph nodes etc), successfully. He recovered very well post operatively, was mobile on the third
day and went home on 5th postoperative day.
This procedure was carried out at Daffodils Multi-speciality Hospital, Vasco; by a team of specialists led by Dr Gurpreet Gill ( Senior Specialist Uro- Oncology Surgeon ); MBBS, MS, FRCS ( Sp. Uro- Surgery), FRCS ( General Surgery) FRSM ( Urology ) and Dr Deepak Kuvelkar; Senior Consultant Anaesthetist.
Biopsy confirmed presence of very aggressive Renal Cell Cancer (Grade IV, in all parts of kidney). The
cut margins of kidney vein, artery, kidney tube (ureter) were clear of tumour as were the lymph nodes and the peripheral margins of kidney confirming complete removal of tumor with no spillage of tumor during surgery: (Stage mp T3aN0M0).
After 2 weeks patient was doing very well with a healed wound, regained appetite and mobility.
Dr Gill explained the significance of early investigations in middle aged or older patients, is essential to catch the disease at an early stage.
In small localised tumours of kidney, only removal of tumour mass is required (Partial Nephron Sparing Nephrectomy), which can also be done via Keyhole Laproscopy which does not need large incisions as done in past which saves the remaining functioning Kidney.
