CANACONA: A leopard fell into a House-well at Galeim (Poinguinim) early Sunday morning and later in the day the petrified wild-cat was pulled out by Forest (Wildlife) rescuers.
The leopard believed to be a habitual visitor to the residential area always preying on the domestic animals, was reportedly chasing a dog, and in the melee to overtook the running pet, the panther on its tract slipped over and fell into the net-covered house-well breaking through Net and got trapped inside the House-Well located at the residence of Prakash Dalal.
The sounds of fall and later nervous attempts to break-free and come out from the well, alerted the house inmates, who came out only to see a wild-cat struggling to come out of the well. After constantly making wild attempts to escape from the well, the badly exhausted wild-cat began to struggle to keep itself float from drowning in the deep well, but kept itself safe by clutching tightly to the motor-pump pipes.
By the time Forest officials on intimation reached at the site, the terrified and almost exhausted leopard kept itself floating holding onto the Pump- pipeline , as forest rescuers lowered a cage, dragged the panther inside the cage and later pulled it up.
According to Forest (Wildlife) sources, the rescued fully grown-up 8year old male-Leopard was taken to Hathipal Rescue Centre and after keeping it for sometime, later released out in the open into the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.
Incidentally, Galiem is situated in very close proximity of the Cotigao Wild life Sanctuary.
