New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, a major fire at an electrical substation near London’s Heathrow Airport has brought one of the world’s busiest transportation hubs to a standstill. The blaze, which erupted late Thursday night, resulted in a significant power outage that forced the airport to close until late Friday night. This incident not only disrupted over 1,350 flights but also highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and the need for robust backup systems in major transportation hubs.
The fire’s impact was far-reaching, affecting thousands of passengers worldwide and leaving more than 16,000 homes without power. The London Fire Brigade responded swiftly, deploying 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters to combat the blaze. Over 150 people were evacuated from nearby areas as a precautionary measure due to the dense smoke emanating from the fire.
Flights were diverted to other airports such as Gatwick, Paris, and Shannon, causing significant disruptions to travel plans. British Airways was among the most affected airlines, with all its flights to and from Heathrow cancelled for the day. The incident is expected to cause ripple effects over the coming days as passengers scramble to reschedule their travel plans. Despite the fire being brought under control, investigations into its cause are ongoing.
