New Delhi: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added another remarkable achievement to his growing list of records after becoming the youngest player to score a half century in Duleep Trophy history.
The 15 year old opener reached the landmark at 15 years and 157 days during East Zone’s semifinal against defending champions Central Zone. He smashed his fifty from just 42 deliveries, striking five fours and three sixes in an aggressive display.
Sooryavanshi surpassed the previous record held by Laxman Singh, who scored a Duleep Trophy half century at the age of 16 years and 23 days in 1969. Piyush Chawla is third on the list, having reached the milestone at 16 years and 307 days.
The young batter came close to another piece of history but fell eight runs short of becoming the youngest player to score a century in the competition.
Sooryavanshi’s innings once again highlighted his fearless approach, with the teenager taking on the bowlers from the beginning and maintaining a high scoring rate. His performance came after he briefly took charge of East Zone during the match when regular captain Ishan Kishan left the field after suffering a blow to his right wrist.
Kishan later returned to resume leadership duties.
Earlier, East Zone’s bowlers produced an impressive performance after Kishan elected to field first. Mukesh Kumar and Abhijit Sarkar claimed three wickets each as Central Zone were dismissed for 266 runs in 80.1 overs.
Mukesh finished with figures of 3 for 56, while Sarkar returned 3 for 38. Mohammed Shami and off spinner Md Kounain Quraishi contributed two wickets apiece to complete a strong bowling effort.
With his latest record, Sooryavanshi continues to attract attention as one of India’s most promising young batting talents. His aggressive style and ability to perform against senior domestic opposition have added another significant chapter to his rapidly developing cricket career.
