Despite being a small state, Goa features among the first six states with maximum unemployment rate in India. As per the report of MoSPI, in 2020-21 the state had the third highest unemployment rate after Nagaland and Lakshadweep. At least 10.5 per cent of the population was unemployed, much above the national unemployment rate of 4.2 per cent.
However, there are several factors affecting the employment scenario in Goa one is the non-availability of enough government jobs, secondly not many new industries are coming in and third, the existing industries prefer non-Goan employees to Goans.
To curb the unemployment scenario, the Dr Pramod Sawant government has decided to hold a first-of-its-kind Mega Job fair.

At a time when government jobs are hard to catch unless you are close to politicians or a political party, the only hope for unemployed Goan youth is the private sector, but sadly, that too has been flooded by employees from other states.
Goa may be faring better than the national average on several indicators but has managed poorly regarding unemployment figures.
In September 2022, the unemployment rate for Goa was 10.86 %. Though Goa’s unemployment rate fluctuated substantially in recent months, it tended to decrease through October 2021 – September 2022 period ending at 10.86 % last month.

To curb the unemployment scenario, the Dr Pramod Sawant government has decided to hold a first-of-its-kind Mega Job fair.
Office of the Commissioner, Labour and Employment, Regional Employment Exchange will organise MEGA JOB FAIR from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on November 8th, 2022, at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, Taleigao – Goa.
Government sources inform us that Vacancies are available in broad sectors such as IT, Pharmaceutical, Tourism & Hospitality, Logistic, Automobile, Health Care, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Manufacturing, Sales, Marketing, Aviation Industry, and Cruise liners.
Employers participating are Princess, P&O Cruises, Carnival, Spicejet, Siemens, Codemax, Grand Hyatt, Geno Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd, Kenilworth Resorts & Spa, Godrej, CMM, Karma Group, KIA, Goa Miles, Novotel, Jubilant Motor Works Pvt Ltd. amongst others.
It seems like an attractive step forward by the State government as the youth will get an opportunity to be employed in multi-national companies.
In the absence of industrial activity and mining stoppage, youth are facing an unprecedented job crisis.
But here, Dr Sawant and his minister Atanasio Monseratte need appreciation for organising such an event.
Of course, the mega job fair is similar to that of campus placements held mostly in every college. Still, it is also different because, in colleges, students with the highest percentage of marks walk away with jobs.
At the mega job fair, we are told academics, as well as experience, would be counted.
Besides, the youth will also get an opportunity to look at vacancies in all top industries under one roof u like hunting for jobs in newspapers and websites.
According to statistics, more than one
Lakh youth are unemployed in Goa which is very high for a State with a population of just 15 lakhs.
Of course, jobs for one lakh youth may not be possible in one mega job fair, and the government will need to do much more than tackle this.
More and more industries need to come up besides mining has to resume at the earliest.
The resumption of mining could solve half the problems.
Raising serious concerns about the rising unemployment rate in the state, the Goa chapter of Mining Engineers’ Association of India (MEAI) appealed to the governments at the Centre and state to immediately allow the resumption of mining activities through the best possible means.
Goa’s economic revival is extremely vital without any further delays, and we urge Govt. to relook at the ever-worsening employability scenario leading to the various repercussions such as rising cases of addictions, domestic violence, stress, illiteracy etc.
