PANAJI: WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar informed that Goa government will lodge a complaint against Karnataka’s ongoing Mhadei diversion work with the Mahadayi PRAWAH (Progressive River Authority for Welfare and Harmony).
“Every 15 to 20 days, our person goes to inspect there and we have noticed the ongoing work. The Goa government is unable to take direct action against Karnataka; instead, the PRAWAH Committee must act and a contempt of court petition must be filed with the Supreme Court,” said Shirodkar.
He further said that the Goa government will insist on a joint inspection by the PRAWAH Committee
“This is going to be Karnataka’s third contempt petition. The Supreme Court has made it very clear that Karnataka cannot proceed with the project without receiving all necessary approvals. He said, “Even Karnataka had given the Court assurances that it would not proceed with work.”
According to Google imagery, according to Shirodkar, no work is currently being done at the suggested location. “Yet, an inspection team from the WRD Mhadei cell is present at the location.
The group will deliver its report to the government by Friday morning today. Karnataka has done some trenching work, based on preliminary images, but we cannot trust that State,” he remarked.
We will write to PRAWAH requesting a joint inspection based on the report. Karnataka will be exposed by a cooperative inspection, and PRAWAH will be prepared to take legal action against them,” he continued.
The interim order dated April 17, 2014, issued by the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal, which stipulated that Karnataka could not begin work without a revised DPR that must be approved by the Union government or the Mhadei Water Management Authority and without obtaining all necessary permissions, was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2020.
