Chandigarh: Punjab has been placed on high alert following an intelligence input warning of a possible attempt by the Shahzad Bhatti network to target military installations in and around Amritsar.
The alert names two alleged Pakistan based operatives, identified as Rana Bhai and Malik, and claims that reconnaissance has been conducted at Khasa Cantonment in Amritsar and the Budha Theh military establishment near Beas. Security agencies have been directed to take the information seriously and strengthen security around sensitive locations.
The warning comes months after a low intensity blast near the boundary wall of Khasa Cantonment on May 5. The explosion damaged a tin sheet along the perimeter, with investigators later determining that an improvised explosive device had been used. Although the incident was suspected to have been a planned attack, no connection has been established between the blast and the latest intelligence input.
The latest alert comes amid increased concern over Pakistan based terror and gangster networks seeking to build operational links in Punjab. Investigators have been examining the involvement of local recruits, facilitators and criminal networks in activities including targeted attacks, weapons movement and the transportation of explosives.
Shahzad Bhatti, a Pakistan based gangster, has figured in several Indian investigations concerning alleged cross border terror and organised crime. Authorities have alleged that he operates through associates and operatives involved in activities inside India.
The National Investigation Agency has also investigated cases allegedly connected to the Bhatti network and conducted searches in Punjab and Haryana.
Security agencies are expected to step up surveillance around Khasa Cantonment, Budha Theh and other sensitive military establishments in the Amritsar region while verifying the intelligence and tracing the alleged operatives.
The alert is being treated as a preventive security measure and does not independently confirm that an attack is imminent.
