MARGAO: In an electrifying encounter at the 33rd Super Soccer Tournament, UC Benaulim clashed with Navelim Villagers Union in memory of the late Joao Xavier, organized by United Boys of Dando Colva at Dando Ground, Benaulim.
Navelim’s early complacency allowed Keegan Fernandes to capitalize on a defensive blunder, putting Benaulim ahead in the 7th minute.
However, Navelim quickly regrouped, asserting dominance yet facing fierce resistance from Benaulim’s midfield trio: captain Arif, Nicholas, and Cedron. Navelim’s persistence paid off with Trevor Souza and Trevis Gomes netting goals in the 17th and 19th minutes, respectively, concluding the first half 2-1.
The second half saw relentless efforts from Malappa and Velington, but Benaulim’s keeper Tino was a wall, making stunning saves to keep hopes alive.
Despite Benaulim’s valiant attempts to equalize, relentless rain hampered their momentum. The match ended 2-1 in Navelim’s favour. Aston Rodrigues of Uc Benaulim earned the Man of the Match award, presented by ex-international footballer Climax Lawrence, honouring Benaulim’s spirited display against the odds.
