PORVORIM: Tourism Minister Babu Azgoankar has clarified that there is no proposal to hand over Aguada Jail to be managed by any private entity as the same is fully under the control and management of GTDC.
“There is no proposal to handover Aguada Jail to be managed by any private entity as the same is fully under control and management of GTDC. GTDC has posted an officer of the rank of General Manager exclusively to look after the day-to-day affairs of the premises,” said Azgoankar.
He further said that the erstwhile Aguada jail premises, located in the Lower portion, which was functioning as Central Jail, has been transferred to GTDC in 2016, pursuant to the decision taken by State Government after the existing Jail was shifted to a new complex at Colvale.
“The premises which were lying in a state of neglect has now been renovated by availing Financial Assistance from Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India under Swadesh Darshan I scheme and will be fully managed by GTDC and will showcase Goa’s glorious liberation struggle to the visiting Indian and Foreign tourists on the lines of Cellular Jail Andamans,” he added.
The minister said that the premises would house a digital museum, sound and light show, display of souvenirs, artefacts, handlooms, handicrafts produced by Goan artisans and Jail inmates and other amenities for tourists like washrooms, cafeterias, information centre, statues of prominent freedom fighters.
