PORVORIM: The owners of 70 illegal borewells in Chimbel that were discovered to have been dug illegally have received notifications from the Water Resources Department (WRD).
Speaking to reporters, Shirodkar said that severe warnings had been given and that anyone found guilty would face fines of between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh. “In Chimbel, some people have dug illegal borewells. There are between 60 and 70 of these borewells, according to the information.
With police support, the WRD Junior Engineer and Assistant Engineer will carry out inspections and make sure these wells are disconnected,” Shirodkar stated. He went on to say that unauthorized borewells might result in fines of between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh under the Goa Ground Water Act of 2002.
The WRD Minister emphasized that obtaining the required permits is a prerequisite for everyone who wants to open or sink a well.
Some of the people who have sunk borewells have received show-cause notifications from the WRD Executive Engineer-I, who also acts as the Ground Water Officer. In order to cut off the electricity to these unauthorized borewells, the officer has also been in touch with the electricity department.
