New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster their bilateral ties, India and Mauritius have elevated their relationship to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. This development marks a new chapter in their cooperation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiling a visionary framework for the Global South, dubbed MAHASAGAR. The partnership is underscored by eight key agreements that focus on enhancing trade, maritime security, and defense cooperation.
At the heart of this strategic upgrade are agreements that facilitate local currency trade settlements and the sharing of maritime data. These measures are designed to strengthen economic ties and enhance regional security. Prime Minister Modi also announced India’s commitment to constructing a new Parliament building in Mauritius, symbolizing India’s role as a supportive partner in the region.
India’s support extends beyond infrastructure development. The country will assist Mauritius in establishing a police academy and a national maritime information sharing center. These initiatives underscore the strategic importance of defense and maritime security cooperation between the two nations. The Enhanced Strategic Partnership is also seen as a strategic move to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean.
Building on India’s previous SAGAR initiative, the MAHASAGAR vision emphasizes trade for development, capacity building, and mutual security. This approach aligns with India’s broader strategy to engage with the Global South, focusing on sustainable growth and shared security. Additionally, India has pledged 500 million Mauritian rupees for community development projects in Mauritius, further solidifying its commitment to the island nation’s socio-economic progress.
The partnership also highlights cooperation in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and space research. This collaborative approach is expected to drive innovation and economic growth in both countries, leveraging their shared cultural heritage and strategic interests.
