Panaji: Old Goa Police have arrested a 40-year-old resident of St Cruz in connection with the alleged assault on government employee Kashinath Shetye during an inspection of suspected illegal land-filling activities in Merces last week.
The accused, identified as Yogesh Tigade, has been booked under charges of attempt to murder, police said.
According to investigators, the incident took place when Shetye, who was part of an inspection team, had visited the Merces area to verify complaints related to alleged illegal land-filling activities.
During the inspection, Shetye was allegedly assaulted, resulting in injuries. The incident had triggered strong reactions from various quarters, with demands for strict action against those involved.
Following the attack, Shetye had reportedly expressed concern over increasing threats faced by government officials while carrying out field inspections and enforcement-related duties.
