The peaceful sleep of many residents of Panaji was disturbed by a huge ‘sonic boom’ and supersonic sound in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
While many were startled with the noise, many of the residents were confused about a sudden booming sound out of nowhere amidst light showers.
The sound was heard by people in and around Panaji on two occasions, once at around 2 am and the next one was around 2.30 am.
The sound travelled across all corners of the city and so did the speculation.
While many people who were awake rushed to their windows to check for the sound , some claimed of seeing an unidentified flying object (UFO) while some assumed that there was a strong presence of fighter jets movement over the capital city.
Very soon, the incident became a hot topic for discussion on several WhatsApp groups and social media handles.
However, highly placed naval sources confirmed on Wednesday morning that the fighter jets that were conducting a routine exercise.
“This was a part of a routine exercise by jets and it was conducted at high altitude flying levels. It was an exercise where the fighter jets have to simulate attack like situations and check for preparedness and readiness to handle such situations,” said the source.
