New Delhi: Ajit Agarkar is set to leave his position as chairman of the BCCI senior men’s selection committee, with former India cricketers Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha emerging as the leading contenders for the role.
Agarkar’s current contract is scheduled to end this month, with the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting set to take place on Friday. While there had been speculation that his tenure could be extended until next year’s ODI World Cup, the latest developments indicate that the board is preparing for a change at the top of the selection panel.
Agarkar may have already chaired his final selection meeting on Wednesday. The committee under his leadership announced India’s squads for the upcoming white ball series against the West Indies as well as the Irani Trophy. Agarkar also headed the selection process for the Rest of India squad.
Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha are now among the names being considered to succeed Agarkar. Both former India players have also been part of successful IPL campaigns, winning the tournament three times.
The change in the selection committee comes amid renewed attention on Rohit Sharma’s international future. The veteran batter was included in India’s ODI squad for the West Indies series despite earlier reports suggesting that he was not part of the selectors’ plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit had faced pressure following a difficult ODI series against England, where he struggled for runs. However, he responded with a match winning 138 in the final game of the series, strengthening his case for continued selection.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had also dismissed speculation over Rohit’s immediate future, stating that the former India captain would continue to be considered as long as he remained part of the selectors’ plans.
The upcoming BCCI AGM could therefore prove significant for both the selection committee and the future direction of India’s senior men’s team.
