Jaipur: Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid has dismissed speculation of a rift with team captain Sanju Samson, reaffirming that both are aligned in their decision-making for the team. The clarification comes ahead of Rajasthan’s crucial IPL 2025 clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, April 19.
Dravid’s response follows the circulation of a viral video showing Samson standing outside the team huddle during a strategic discussion for the Super Over against Delhi Capitals. The footage led to speculation about internal discord within the Royals’ camp.
“I don’t know where these reports are coming from. Sanju and I are on the same page,” Dravid said during a pre-match press conference. “He is an integral part of the leadership group and is deeply involved in the decision-making process.”
Dravid, who has previously worked with Samson during his tenure at the National Cricket Academy and later as the India head coach, emphasized that team strategies are devised collaboratively, involving coaches, analysts, and the skipper.
“The decisions are being made by me, in consultation with Sanju, our coaching staff, and the analytics team,” Dravid stated.
“Not every decision in cricket turns out right, but I have complete faith in the support system around me and in Sanju’s leadership.”
The Royals began their IPL 2025 campaign with promise, registering key victories over Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. However, they’ve since suffered a three-match losing streak, putting pressure on the squad to bounce back.
Adding to their challenges has been the fitness concern around Sanju Samson, who had picked up an injury earlier in the tournament.
Providing an update, Dravid said, “Sanju experienced some pain in his abdominal region. He underwent scans today, and we’re currently awaiting the results. Based on those, we’ll assess the situation and decide on his availability.”
The Royals will be hoping for Samson’s quick recovery as they aim to return to winning ways and strengthen their position in the IPL points table.
