New Delhi: The INDIA bloc intensified its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday as Opposition MPs marched from Parliament towards Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the Election Commission of India. The protesters carried “Save Democracy” banners and demanded Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The march began from Makar Dwar after Opposition MPs assembled at Parliament. Security was tightened across central Delhi, with police and paramilitary personnel deployed along the route. The protesters were stopped before reaching the Election Commission office.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi subsequently sat on a dharna after being prevented from proceeding towards Nirvachan Sadan. He reiterated the Opposition’s demand for accountability from the Election Commission and called for Kumar to step down.
The protest is part of a wider INDIA bloc campaign over the SIR exercise and concerns surrounding electoral rolls. The alliance has announced a series of programmes, including district level marches, public meetings and larger rallies in the coming weeks. A major “Save Democracy” rally is planned in Delhi on November 1.
The Congress has also planned a longer campaign, with block level programmes and public meetings aimed at keeping the issue in the political spotlight ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is examining petitions related to the Election Commission’s functioning and the SIR process. The court has issued notices to the Election Commission and Gyanesh Kumar while declining to pass an immediate order removing or suspending him. The proceedings are continuing, with the court examining whether decisions taken during the electoral revision process followed the required procedure.
The INDIA bloc is expected to continue discussions with other Opposition parties as it seeks wider participation in its campaign against the Election Commission.
