CANACONA: After the contractor failed to carry out afforestation on the Manohar Parrikar bypass for last two years, Chandan Dhuri along with his family members took it upon themselves to plant various types of ornamental plants on the divider of the scenic bypass road from Rajbagh to Talpona bridge.
The four lane Manohar Parrikar bypass road linking Char Rasta to Mashem was inaugurated in November 2019 and the divider was devoid of any ornamental plants since then.
Dhuri family showing their concern and to beautify the divider of the road took it upon themselves and planted various types of ornamental plants recently.
Sharing their unique feat on social media, the Rajbagh Dhuri family exhibited exuberance while planting the ornamental plants and wrote that these plants will not only beautify the road but once they grow tall they will block the glare of the light coming from the opposite side.
These 7.74 km four lane road consists of two bridges and is built at a cost of about 300 crores and reduces the distance from Canacona to Karwar by almost 10km, while the travel time is reduced by almost thirty minutes.
The road itself passes through the picturesque countryside of Canacona and it is common to see many a traveller’s stopping on the road side to enjoy the nature’s bliss on both the sides of this road.
These roadside stops have thrown more challenges to the law enforcement agencies as it is creating hazardous situation for the other travellers.
Highway office in Canacona informed that the contractor of this road is supposed to plant ornamental plants on the entire stretch and it is part of the contract, but even after close to two years after it was thrown open the contractor has not bothered to fulfill this commitment.
The Dhuri family who took part in the plantation drive included Rajesh Dhuri, Chandan Dhuri, Kundan Dhuri and their other family members and friends.
Dhuri informed that this plants will also give help reduce carbon and increase oxygen in the air.
Lot of locals use the shoulders of this road on either side for their evening walk, they will also feel good said one of the family members involved in the drive.
With PWD not showing interest in making the contractor to plant the ornamental plants on the one meter wide divider of the 7.74km long stretch, it is left to be seen whether the other stretch will be taken up by other equally enthusiastic locals from the taluka or it remains barren, quipped Anil Bhagat, a social activist.
