PORVORIM: A law student, facing allegations in the murder of a salon staffer in Porvorim, has been denied anticipatory bail by the Sessions Court.
Notwithstanding his protests about his impending final year exam, the Court decided that, given the gravity of the situation, his involvement could not be ruled out and that he would therefore have to submit to an investigation.
Rehbar Khan, 21, was allegedly killed, and his body was dumped near Audit Bhavan in Porvorim. At least five people were arrested in connection with the incident, while others are still at large.
The fugitive defendant emphasized during the plea hearing that he was dedicated to his studies and was working hard to get ready for his semester IV exams, which started on April 20, 2024. The student promised the court he would assist the investigation even though he denied being involved in the crime.
“He will forfeit the entire year he has studied if he is arrested.” He has no criminal history, is not connected to the alleged offence, and hails from a well-respected family.
The accused’s attorney argued that his client is innocent of the charges made against him and that he is prepared to assist with the investigation and go to trial to prove his innocence.
Conversely, the prosecution requested his custody, claiming that additional accused have not yet been located and apprehended in addition to the need to retrieve vital evidence such as firearms, automobiles, and the victim’s lost cell phone.
The co-accused’s statements, which disclosed that he was seen with other accused both before and during the crime, were also submitted by the prosecution. Co-accused statements are preliminary, the Court acknowledged, but they offer useful leads for additional research.
