PANAJI: Rohit Monserrate was re-elected as Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor, while Sanjiv Naik was elected as his deputy.
The elections to elect the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor were held at 11 am today in the CCP town hall.
It is learnt that the current Deputy Mayor Vasant Aghshikar declined to re-contest the election, paving the way for his colleagues to contest.
“We are here only for the development of Panjim. We have a game plan of what we want to do. We also need to look into each ward and see what development needs to be done and fulfil whatever promises we made to the people. Plus, we have a very good team, and I think we can get a lot done,” he added.
“I think it’s good that we get a chance also. There are a lot of policies that we could actually implement. That can help and benefit the people of Panjim.” he added.
Only one nomination each was received from Rohit Monserrate for the Mayor’s post and from ward 25 councillor Sanjiv Naik for the Deputy Mayor’s post. Since there were no other contestants, the duo was declared elected unopposed after scrutiny of their nominations.
As per the CCP Act, the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are to be elected every year. In the CCP elections held in March last year, the panel supported by Cabinet Minister Atanasio `Babush’ Monserrate had swept the elections by winning 25 seats in the 30-Member Corporation.
