VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said on Wednesday that the Government must immediately take steps towards the maintenance of the Municipal market complex.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said that the municipal market was a very old building and needed urgent maintenance work.
“I have raised the issue in the assembly on Tuesday because the safety of the people is of paramount importance. The building is old and there is a wear and tear factor that affects it, with some people claiming that pieces of concrete and plastering have been falling. We have taken this issue with the Government to take up urgent maintanence of the building, especially because a lot of people visit the place at all times. The safety of the people and the shopkeepers are of great importance to me,” said Salkar.
Salkar said that there was a proposal for a new market complex in the pipeline.
“The new market project is a huge proposal and involves many factors like rehabilitation of the existing shopkeepers etc. We will take the shell of the market complex into confidence before going ahead with the project because the new market complex will be built for them. The shopkeepers have been there for several years but in case we need to have a good market complex, we may have to shift them temporarily and build the new complex in quick time. However, the new project will take a long time and the Government can at least take up the maintenance of the existing market for the safety of the people,” said Salkar.
