New Delhi: Sharmila Dhankar scripted history by becoming India’s first ever para athletics gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games after winning the women’s shot put F57 event on Monday.
The Indian star delivered a season best throw of 9.81 metres to secure the gold medal, ending the country’s 20 year wait for a medal in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games. The victory marked a major milestone for Indian para sports and added another memorable chapter to the nation’s success at the Games.
India’s celebrations became even bigger after Shilpa K. Shyla was upgraded to the bronze medal following an official review. Shyla had initially finished fourth despite producing a personal best throw of 7.26 metres.
The result changed after Indian officials challenged the standings. Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi, who was originally awarded bronze, had her only valid looking attempt ruled a foul after a review, resulting in Shilpa moving into the medal positions. The decision gave India two medals in the event, although Nigeria is expected to challenge the revised result.
An emotional Shilpa celebrated alongside Sharmila after the upgraded finish was confirmed.
Competing in the F57 category for athletes with lower limb impairments, limb deficiencies or reduced muscle power, Sharmila has overcome significant challenges after contracting polio in her left leg at the age of two. Earlier this year, she won gold at the Fazza International Para Athletics Championship and improved on her fourth place finish at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games by claiming a historic title.
