CANACONA – A mini Landslide on NH-66, flooding of streets and an uprooted tree fall blocking an internal road marred the third day of heavy rains even as the seasonal total has crossed 1350mm and water bodies continue to rise in Canacona.
Approximately 6 inches of rain was already recorded on Tuesday, even as rains continued to pound with most rivers running up to the brinks in Canacona taluka.
The water storage in 35.18 RL Chapoli dam has considerably increased at Rain 143.40 mm total rainfall of 1332.30 mm on midnight of Tuesday.
Water logging on many of the streets, especially in Chaudi town and surroundings, has become the order of the day, as most of the roadside drains are reduced to non-functional with an accumulation of siltation.
A jungle tree has uprooted and collapsed on the road at Ambeaghat, blocking the road from Gaondongrim to Neturlim; fire services personnel rushed to clear the tree and were still at the site when the report was being filed.
A landslide has occurred at Gulem, bringing large chunks o mud on the NH-66 road. However, the traffic ran unaffected.
While the three major rivers in the taluka at Saleri, Galgibaga and Talpona running on their
bank brinks, a substantial increase of water level rise is recorded at Talpona river at 7.20 meters early Tuesday morning, which later in the increased as rains consistently poured.
Meanwhile, many of the paddy fields freshly prepared with seedlings for nursery were inundated with rain flood waters gushing into the fields, raising concerns amongst the farmers.
The heavy rains are, however, a blessing for Chilly cultivation where the chilly saplings transplantation is recently carried out on hillocks.
No untoward incident, heavy waterlogging, or landslides are reported, though heavy rains continued to pound the taluka until late into Tuesday night.
