MARGAO: A proposal from the All Goa Toddy Tappers Association to increase the amount of assistance in the event of death from a fall was approved by the Welfare Board, marking a significant step forward for the welfare of Goan toddy tappers.
The families of toddy tappers who must deal with the dangers of their occupation will now receive much-needed help thanks to the increase in the relief sum from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.
Furthermore, the Association has declared that Goa’s famous coconut feni, as well as coconut vinegar and jaggery, are expected to gain international prominence after obtaining the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) designation.
The Goa Welfare Board has also consented to raise compensation for wounded toddy tappers, according to Francis Fernandes, head of the All Goa Toddy Tappers Association.
The Welfare Board has authorized a compensation of Rs 25,000 for the relatives of the deceased toddy tapper in cases of natural death. In order to provide wider benefits for workers in the coconut industry, the Chairman of the Welfare Board has also consented to expand the Agriculture Department’s coconut plucker program to include toddy tappers.
