SIOLIM: A 35-year-old man died and a 10-year-old child sustained serious injuries after a Mahindra Thar allegedly driven by a tourist crashed into a scooter in Siolim during the early hours of Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Sanket Dabolkar, who was riding the scooter at the time of the accident. The child travelling as a pillion rider suffered severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
According to police sources, the Thar allegedly rammed head-on into the scooter with considerable force, leaving both victims critically injured. Locals and emergency personnel rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to a nearby medical facility. However, Dabolkar later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have detained the tourist who was allegedly driving the vehicle. Sources said a breathalyser test conducted after the accident reportedly indicated alcohol levels above the permissible legal limit, though official confirmation from authorities is still awaited.
The incident has once again sparked concerns among residents over reckless driving by tourists and the alleged illegal operation of private vehicles as rent-a-cars in Goa.
Locals and road safety activists have repeatedly highlighted the rise in accidents linked to rash driving, drunk driving and unauthorised vehicle rental activities across the state.
Police have launched a further investigation into the case.
