VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar conducted a joint inspection of the Tanya Ground along with Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) officials, as plans to develop the facility into a comprehensive Sports City complex gathered momentum.
Salkar said discussions were underway with landowners and Communidade authorities for acquiring around 4,500 square metres of additional land. The proposed acquisition would take the total area of the ground to approximately 19,000 square metres, providing greater scope for the planned Sports City development.
During the inspection, Salkar said priority would be given to facilities that can be executed quickly, particularly a futsal ground and walking track. Volleyball facilities and a cricket pitch could also be developed in a short period.
“The futsal ground and walking track can be opened at the earliest. These facilities do not require much time and can be taken up immediately. With the compound wall already completed, we can now move ahead with the next phase,” Salkar said.
He said the objective was to transform the Tanya Ground into an attractive sporting and recreational destination for residents of Vasco and surrounding areas, rather than merely creating individual sports facilities.
Salkar added that a consultant associated with the development of Joggers Park at Chicalim would also be brought into the project to explore plans for developing the Tanya Ground as a well-designed park incorporating sports facilities, walking areas and other public amenities.
He said the proposed land acquisition would be important to provide adequate space and enable comprehensive planning of the Sports City complex.
The joint inspection was aimed at assessing the existing ground, identifying works that can be taken up immediately and preparing for the larger expansion once the additional land is secured.
With the compound wall already completed, Salkar said the focus would now be on executing quick-to-complete facilities, particularly the futsal ground and walking track, while planning for the larger Sports City complex proceeds simultaneously.
