TALEIGAO: For the elections to the 11-member Taleigao panchayat, where voting with ballot papers is scheduled for Sunday, campaigning concluded at dusk on Friday.
Only seven wards will have polling, and the results of four of those wards have already been announced because there was only one contestant remaining after withdrawal. All four of the undefeated winners are loyal to the committee that Revenue Minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate established.
To guarantee a contest in seven wards, a group calling themselves “Taleigaokars United” has put up some semblance of opposition. Leaders of the AAP like Francis Coelho and Cecille Rodrigues have joined in favor of the group.
The most intriguing matchup is in ward II, where Agnelo D’Cunha, a longtime Monserrate aide, will compete against Domnic D’Cunha.
The State Election Commission has released a schedule for counting the votes, which calls for the results to be announced the following Monday.
As per the SEC, there are 19,349 eligible voters out of whom 9,206 are males and 10,143 women.
The elections are to be held on non-party lines and the votes are to be cast through ballot papers.
