New Delhi: Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for expressing solidarity with Nepal and offering India’s support following the devastating floods that have killed more than 160 people.
The Nepal Prime Minister’s Office said Kathmandu deeply appreciated Modi’s condolences and his offer of humanitarian assistance during the crisis. Shah described India’s gesture as a reflection of the longstanding friendship between the two neighbouring countries, adding that Nepal places great value on those ties.
Modi had earlier spoken with Shah and conveyed his condolences over the loss of lives. He assured Nepal that India was prepared to provide all possible humanitarian assistance and said teams from both countries were coordinating rescue and relief operations.
The Indian government has already dispatched emergency supplies and medicines to assist Nepal as authorities struggle to deal with the widespread destruction.
The latest disaster began when the Bhote Koshi River surged through central Nepal on Wednesday, affecting Rasuwa and Dhading districts near the Tibet border as well as Nuwakot.
The powerful floodwaters swept through settlements, damaged infrastructure and destroyed bridges, leaving several communities difficult to access. At least a dozen hydropower projects have also been affected, adding to the economic and infrastructure damage.
The broader flood and landslide disaster along the Nepal China border has claimed at least 160 lives, while hundreds of people remain unaccounted for.
Nepal Police have recovered 157 bodies, while three deaths have been reported in Tibet following a mudslide near a border hub. Around 265 people are still missing in the affected Chinese region.
The disaster has also raised concerns in India, with at least 133 Indian nationals reported missing after the flash floods struck central Nepal. Rescue and search operations remain underway as authorities work to locate missing people and assess the full extent of the damage.
