PANAJI: In all 130 persons died and 139 were grievously injured in road accidents in Goa in the past 6 months from March to August 2023 as per statistics released by the Directorate of Transport.
1,410 accidents were recorded in the State in these 6 months.
The Dept issued 30,855 challans to traffic violators during this period.
Of these, 28,605 were issued in the three months of June to August, after department intensified its drive against traffic violations following increase in fatal accidents in Goa.
The maximum i.e. 30 accidental deaths were recorded in March while minimum i.e. 13 deaths were recorded in August 2023.
However, the number of accidents per month continue to be above 200.
The Police said that road engineering aspects like speed breakers, rumble strips, signages, etc were examined to minimise accidents at these hotspots.
They said that a joint inspection with the local police team, traffic and officials of the Public Works department will be carried out.
Besides this, a special prosecution drive under Road Safety Day will be conducted. Integrated pickets will be increased with thrust on maximum challans for violating the Motor Vehicle Act.
Fatalities and injuries sustained in road accidents are matters of great concern particularly with the recent surge in accidents in the district.
Major accidents cause deaths, disabilities and hospitalisation. This traumatises the families of the affected due to untimely deaths, injuries, disabilities, etc.
