Panaji: The United Club of Utorda, in collaboration with the Goa Football Development Council, successfully conducted a Summer Football Camp that drew an enthusiastic response from young players in the region.
A total of 148 trainees participated in the camp, underlining the growing passion for football among youth in Utorda. The closing ceremony saw the presence of key dignitaries, including GFDC Member Secretary Fransquinha Oliveira, club president Trinidade Fernandes, Utorda Sarpanch Celina Gomes, and Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Fr Arvino Fernandes.
Addressing the gathering, Oliveira praised the organisers for the impressive turnout and emphasised the potential for reviving Utorda as a prominent grassroots football centre. She noted that the village had previously hosted a functioning GFDC centre, which could be re-established to further nurture local talent. The strong participation, she said, reflects both community support and the increasing enthusiasm for structured football training.
She also highlighted GFDC’s broader efforts in strengthening grassroots football across the state, pointing out the presence of several active centres in South Goa and a network that spans multiple locations. The contribution of local coaches Marcus and Jennifer was acknowledged for their role in guiding and mentoring young players, both on and off the field.
Oliveira stressed that initiatives like these camps are vital in building a solid foundation for the future of football in Goa. She expressed confidence that with continued backing from parents, clubs, and the community, Utorda could once again emerge as a thriving hub for the sport.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr Fernandes encouraged the participants to prioritise discipline and values alongside skill development. He emphasised that respect, self control, and proper conduct are essential qualities that define not just a good player, but a well rounded individual.
