PANAJI: Congress and the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) are moving ahead with discussions on a common political programme, with the two parties holding an alliance meeting in Dona Paula to work out key issues ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
The meeting at the International Centre was attended by RGP president Shavina Naik Shirodkar, GPCC president Girish Chodankar and members of the respective alliance committees.
Discussions focused on a proposed common manifesto, including the demand to scrap Section 39A, concerns over Goa’s financial burden and other issues affecting the state. Seat-sharing was also discussed, but no decision has been taken on the allocation of constituencies.
AICC Goa co-incharge Anjali Nimbalkar said the alliance talks were continuing and that further discussions would be held in the coming days. She said anyone who supports Goa’s issues and wants the state to progress is welcome.
The Mahadayi water dispute also featured in the discussions. Nimbalkar said Goa’s rights over the issue must be protected while Karnataka’s rights should also be respected. She called on the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and work towards resolving the long-pending dispute.
RGP MLA Viresh Borkar said the proposed Congress-RGP alliance was moving in a positive direction and that the immediate focus was on strengthening the alliance at the grassroots level.
Borkar claimed the BJP was feeling pressure from the developing alliance and said the Congress and RGP would continue their organisational work across Goa.
