PANAJI: In order to complete the Porvorim flyover project, the Goa government notified the Bombay High Court in Goa that two trees had already been cut down and that two more would be translocated.
Advocate General Devidas Pangam clarified during the hearing of a miscellaneous civil application that raised concerns about the alleged large-scale tree felling for the project that nine of the 14 trees mentioned in the petition would not be cut because the government had not granted permission for them to be cut.
“Out of the five that remained, two had already been cut down, two were going to be moved, and one could not be moved,” he said
Judges MS Karnik and Valmiki Menezes of the Division Bench approved the report, which was written in response to a directive by the High Court to evaluate the likelihood of preserving these trees.
The Bench has additionally mandated that the State produce a report detailing the replanting of trees or saplings, including information on the species to be replanted, the timeframe, the places, etc. The administration was given four weeks by the court to submit the comprehensive report, which will be discussed at the upcoming hearing.
Senior counsel Norma Alvares brought up the fact that the Tree Authority Goa had allowed the cutting of trees without a clear plan, and as a result, the Court ordered the Authority to undertake research on tree felling and planting during the most recent session
