PANAJI: To commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, three convicts, two of whom are serving rigorous imprisonment for culpable homicide, will be released on August 15, 2023.
At the Cabinet meeting, it was decided to grant Sayyed Zubair, Ajit Bezbaruah, and Vinay Kerkatta remission or pardon, as recommended by the screening committee.
Kerkatta has completed the longest prison sentence of the three at five years, six months, and 29 days. He had received a seven-year RI sentence as well as a Rs 10,000 fine from the court.
Out of the 10 years RI the court ordered, Bezbaruh has served seven years and seven months. The third defendant has been found guilty in an assault case.
The Public Works Department will purchase more than 2 lakh square meters of land from the Water Resources Department for the western bypass project, among other Cabinet decisions.
