PANAJI: The Transport Department suspended the licenses of over 4,000 drivers and riders in a three-month period, from January 1 to March 31, 2024, as part of a crackdown on traffic violators. The majority of the penalties were for helmet violations.
For a variety of infractions, the Traffic Police recommended that 5,211 driver’s licenses be suspended; the Transport Department issued 4025 of these suspensions.
The most suspensions—2,824—were for not wearing a helmet. Overspeeding—561, using a cell phone while driving—230, and drunk driving—172.

The Office of the Assistant Director of Transport in Margao issued the greatest number of license suspensions (1,407), followed by Mapusa ADT (871 suspensions), Bicholim (662), Vasco (311), Quepem (285), Pernem 180, Panaji 145, Ponda 124, Canacona 34, and Dharbandora (with the fewest, six suspensions).
