CANACONA: Shree Mallikarjun & Shri Chetan Manju Desai College, Canacona, celebrated the “Tradition of Sweet August” to revive awareness among students about traditional Goan customs, celebrations and their cultural significance.
The programme focused on the traditional practice of preparing sweet dishes at home and commencing the month of August with coconut and jaggery. The initiative aimed to help students understand and appreciate the customs that have been part of Goan life over the years.
Local homemaker Mrs Ida Monteiro was the chief guest at the programme. Vice Principal Dr Rupa Chari welcomed the gathering, while Head of the Department of History, Ms Domitel D’Souza, in her introductory remarks, highlighted the significance of the tradition and the importance of passing such practices on to younger generations.
Monteiro interacted with the students and shared valuable information about the tradition of “Sweet August” and the traditional practice of ‘Purumenta’. Her interaction provided students with an insight into Goan traditions of the bygone era and the importance of preserving the cultural essence of Goa.
The programme was followed by the distribution of coconut and jaggery among faculty members and students. The celebration created an atmosphere of cultural awareness, sweetness and positivity across the campus.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Assistant Professor Ms Aantxa Colaco.
