CANACONA: An elderly woman’s house at Tembewada-Palolem was completely gutted in a fire on Thursday morning, resulting in extensive damage to the house and household belongings.
The house belonged to Laxmi Komarpant, who was asleep inside when she realised that a fire had broken out. She raised an alarm, following which neighbours rushed to the spot and attempted to douse the flames by pouring water.
However, due to the intensity of the fire, the fire brigade was summoned. After strenuous efforts, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, but not before substantial damage was caused.
Household items, including a cupboard, refrigerator and various electrical appliances, were completely destroyed in the fire.
On Friday morning, Canacona MLA and Minister Ramesh Tawadkar visited the site to assess the damage and expressed concern over the incident. He assured Komarpant that a new house would be constructed for her under the government’s ‘Shramdham’ scheme.
Those present during the visit included Canacona BJP Mahila Morcha president Neetu Desai, Kushwant Bhagat, Mahesh Naik, Vinay Tubki, Vishal Desai, Siddharth Desai and Police Inspector Terran D’Costa, among others.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, although a short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blaze.
