QUEPEM: The proposed regularisation of houses on land belonging to Shree Sateri Devalaya at Xeldem under the Mhaje Ghar scheme has come under scrutiny, with the Devasthan Committee and Mahajans questioning the circumstances under which private individuals allegedly came to occupy the temple property.
A hearing concerning land bearing Survey No. 172/2 was held on Tuesday at the Deputy Collector’s office in Quepem.
As per the details raised during the proceedings, the temple land had reportedly been leased to certain individuals, who subsequently sub-leased portions of the property to other persons. The alleged sub-lessees have now approached the authorities seeking regularisation of their houses and the land under the Mhaje Ghar scheme.
The applicants in the matter are Mohammed Mustafa and Gous Mohammad.
The Devasthan Committee and Mahajans questioned the legality of the alleged sub-leasing arrangements and sought to know how the applicants acquired possession of the temple land.
They further questioned how such transactions could have taken place when the Mamlatdar is the administrator of the said property, and sought accountability over the manner in which the occupants were allowed to establish their possession.
The objections have brought the focus on the circumstances surrounding the alleged transfer of possession and whether the claims for regularisation can be considered when the land in question belongs to the temple.
The matter has raised concerns among the temple’s stakeholders, who are seeking clarity on the status of the property and the basis on which the applicants have sought benefits under the Mhaje Ghar scheme.
