PANAJI: The Salesian Province of Panjim (INP), Konkan, made a remarkable impression on the national stage by finishing as runners-up at the first U17 All India Inter-Province Don Bosco Basketball Tournament, hosted by Don Bosco School of Excellence in Hyderabad. The tournament brought together teams from Don Bosco Provinces across India, including Bangalore, Trichy, Telangana, Goa, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Shillong, and Guwahati, reflecting the growing sporting talent within the Salesian network.
Panjim Province stunned fans with a series of commanding performances. They opened their campaign by defeating Mumbai [INB] 42–19, followed by an impressive 67–48 win over hosts Telangana [INH], topping Pool A and advancing to the semifinals. In a high-stakes semifinal clash against the strong Chennai [INM] team, Panjim showcased resilience and skill, clinching a 37–29 victory to secure their place in the final.
The championship match saw Panjim face a formidable Shillong side. Despite a determined effort and moments of brilliance, the Panjim team narrowly lost 33–41, earning a well-deserved runner-up finish. The squad featured standout players from across Goa, many of whom had represented the state at the Junior Nationals, including David Xavier, Aaron Ponraj, Sean Fernandes, Jude Fernandes, Joshua Pillai, Darren Noronha, Alfez Pandial, Avner Mendonca, Kayden Mendes, Kevin De Souza, Jairam Agni, and Conrad Gomes.
The team’s success was guided by Fr. Ralin De Souza (SYM Delegate – Assistant Coach), head coach Royston Costa, and Br. James Marcus (INP Sports Coordinator), whose leadership and mentorship were pivotal in shaping the team’s exceptional performance.
The Panjim Province’s achievement at the national level underscores the rising standard of basketball within the Salesian community and sets the stage for even greater accomplishments in future tournaments.
