New Delhi: Delhi has put in place an extensive security and traffic plan ahead of the BRICS Summit, scheduled from September 11 to 13 at Bharat Mandapam. Around 7,000 security personnel and nearly 4,800 traffic police officers have been deployed to manage the high profile event and ensure the safety of foreign delegates and other dignitaries.
Security arrangements cover not only the summit venue but also airports, hotels, sensitive locations and the routes used by VVIP convoys. Delhi Police, paramilitary forces, the National Security Guard, Intelligence Bureau, Special Protection Group and other agencies are working together as part of the multi layer security network.
A five kilometre security zone has been established around Bharat Mandapam. The venue will have strict access controls, CCTV and technical surveillance, biometric verification and anti sabotage checks. Bomb detection teams and quick response units will remain on standby throughout the summit.
Around 10 major hotels hosting foreign delegates are also under enhanced security. Dedicated arrangements have been made for routes connecting these hotels with the airport and summit venue.
Traffic Restrictions Across Key Delhi Roads
The movement of VVIP convoys is expected to affect traffic on more than 35 major roads, including Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Mathura Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Marg.
Authorities have identified 22 major diversion points to manage congestion and facilitate secure convoy movement. Vehicles travelling towards Mathura Road and Bharat Mandapam may be redirected through Lodhi Road and Lodhi Flyover, while traffic near Dhaula Kuan and Sardar Patel Marg could be diverted towards Ring Road, Vande Mataram Marg or NH 48.
Technology will also play a key role, with GPS tracking of VVIP convoys, extensive CCTV monitoring and aerial surveillance to detect unauthorised drones.
Schools and government offices in Delhi will remain closed on September 11, while private companies have been encouraged to facilitate work from home.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid sensitive areas where possible, plan journeys in advance and use the Delhi Metro to minimise congestion. Special arrangements have also been made to ensure emergency vehicles receive uninterrupted passage.
