PANAJI: The Goa Crime Branch has detained four persons as part of its investigation into the shooting targeting casino executive Srinivas Nayak in Porvorim, with investigators now probing the larger conspiracy behind the attack.
The suspects were detained during the ongoing investigation, and police are working to establish their individual roles and possible links to the attack. The formal arrest procedure is reportedly underway.
The alleged shooters, however, remain at large. Investigators have identified the persons suspected of carrying out the firing and are conducting searches to locate them.
Nayak, a director of the Majestic Pride Group, came under fire on August 25 near the Neo Majestic premises in Porvorim. The attack occurred at around 8.47 pm as he was preparing to leave the premises.
According to the investigation, two armed men allegedly approached the area and fired several rounds towards Nayak. His security personnel responded with gunfire, following which the attackers escaped.
Nayak was not injured in the incident. CCTV recordings from the area have emerged as an important part of the investigation, with footage reportedly showing the suspected attackers waiting in the vicinity before the shooting.
The Crime Branch is examining the circumstances leading up to the attack, including the possibility of a business-related dispute. Investigators are also trying to determine whether the four detained suspects were involved in planning, facilitating or otherwise supporting the assault.
The probe is continuing as police step up efforts to apprehend the alleged shooters and establish the complete chain of events behind the Porvorim firing.
